La fontana fu costruita tra il 1551 e il 1553 sotto la direzione del celebre scalpellino João Lopes, o Velho, nello stile caratteristico delle fontane pubbliche del nord-ovest della penisola iberica da lui introdotto.
La Chafariz do Terreiro è una suggestiva fontana rinascimentale nella piazza Praça do Conselheiro Silva Torres.
La fontana è composta da tre vasche sovrapposte di dimensioni crescenti, poste su una colonna centrale a pianta piramidale . La decorazione combina motivi geometrici con figure mitologiche , tipiche dello stile rinascimentale di quel periodo. La fontana è posta su una piattaforma circolare, circondata da una balaustra in ferro.
