El Mae Klong tiene la cuenca más grande de la región occidental y la tercera más grande de Tailandia. Se forma por la confluencia de Khwae Noi y Khwae Yai en Kanchanaburi, y desemboca en el Golfo de Tailandia. El río tiene 520 km de longitud, se origina en la accidentada cordillera que limita con Birmania. Dos presas, la presa Sri Nakharin construida a través del río Khwae Yai en 1980, y la Khao Laem, hoy llamada presa Vajiralongkhorn construida a través del río Khwae Noi en 1985, han creado embalses de gran capacidad. Los ríos Khwae Noi y Khwae Yai, que fluyen a través de áreas montañosas accidentadas y tienen pendientes pronunciadas, se consideran las partes altas, mientras que el área de la llanura Mae Klong se considera la parte baja.
