La gare de Lienz est la gare la plus importante du Tyrol oriental. Elle représente un arrêt important de la Drautalbahn. La gare existe depuis 1871 et a été reconstruite entre 1947 et 1950 après des dommages importants en 1944/45.
La gare de Lienz a été construite en 1871 selon les plans de Wilhelm von Flattich. Étant donné que la gare de Lienz était la principale station de la liaison entre Villach et Franzensfeste, la gare de Lienz a été construite en tant que bâtiment de gare de classe I.
