L'avenue Léopold II se courbe gracieusement autour de la statue de femme la plus célèbre d'Ostende : La Mer. Allongée Nue est un autre nom pour cette dame, mais dans le langage courant, elle est toujours appelée "Dikke Mathille". Le sculpteur Georges Grard avait une préférence pour le nu féminin dans son œuvre. Dans La Mer, il a représenté l'opulence et la sensualité de la mer sous la forme d'une figure féminine. Jusqu'en 1963, l'œuvre d'art a embelli le Kursaal.
