Die Leopold II-laan schlängelt sich elegant um den bekanntesten Frauenakt Oostendes herum: “De Zee”. Liegender Akt ist ein anderer Name für diese Dame, aber im Volksmund wird sie einfach „Dikke Mathille“ genannt. Grard betonte das Volumen der vollen, runden Formen. Mit De Zee gibt er die Üppigkeit und Sensualität der See in einer Frauenfigur wieder.
Bis 1963 schmückte das Kunstwerk den Kursaal.
