The Leopold II avenue curves in an elegant bend around the most famous female statue of Ostend: The Sea. Reclining Nude is another name for this lady, but she is commonly referred to as "Fat Mathille." Sculptor Georges Grard had a preference for female nudes in his work. In The Sea, he embodied the richness and sensuality of the sea in a female figure. Until 1963, the artwork adorned the Kursaal.
