Le béguinage de Sainte-Élisabeth date de 1238 et a été inscrit en 1998 sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO - un morceau unique d'histoire au cœur de la ville. Le béguinage a été détruit plusieurs fois au cours des siècles, sa forme actuelle date du 17ème siècle. Vous y trouverez une quarantaine de maisons baroques avec un jardin clos et une maison témoin. Dans la salle Sainte-Anne, l'on explique, à l'aide de patrimoine authentique et de techniques multimédias modernes, ce qu'était exactement un béguinage. Après une promenade dans les rues décorées, vous pouvez vous reposer au café 'Maison de la Grande Dame'. La toute dernière béguine au monde, Marcella Pattyn, a vécu de 1960 à 2005 dans le béguinage de Courtrai. Elle est décédée en 2013 à l'âge de 93 ans.
