The St. Elizabeth Beguinage dates back to 1238 and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998 - a unique piece of history in the heart of the city. The beguinage has been destroyed several times throughout the centuries, and its current form was established in the 17th century. You will find around forty baroque houses with a fenced front garden and a show house. In the St. Anna Hall, the authentic heritage and modern media techniques explain what a beguinage was exactly. After a walk through the decorated streets, you can relax in the coffee house 'Huis van de Grootjuffrouw'. The very last beguine in the world, Marcella Pattyn, lived in the Kortrijk beguinage from 1960 to 2005. She passed away in 2013 at the age of 93.
