Le tunnel de Bernistap faisait partie d'un projet mégalomane du début du 19e siècle visant à relier la Meuse à la Moselle par un canal et des tunnels. Après l'indépendance de la Belgique, ce plan utopique prit fin. Le tunnel de Bernistap – long de 2.528 mètres – est un vestige. Après des années de négligence, l'endroit est envahi par la végétation. Il ne reste plus grand-chose du canal, sinon une mare.
