De tunnel van Bernistap, maakte deel uit van een megalomaan project uit het begin van de 19e eeuw om de Maas met de Moezel te verbinden door een kanaal en tunnels. Na de onafhankelijkheid van België kwam er een einde aan dit utopisch plan. De tunnel van Bernistap – 2.528 meter lang – is een overblijfsel. Na jaren van verwaarlozing is de plek overwoekerd. Van het kanaal blijft niet veel meer over dan een poel.
