'La pierre balegemoise' est un concept dans l'histoire de l'architecture en Flandre. Elle a été extraite dans le pays d'Aalst et surtout à Balegem. L'utilisation de cette pierre tendre - de la famille du grès Lediaan - a connu un fort renouveau au 12e siècle pour atteindre un sommet durant la période gothique. Au 19e siècle, la carrière a repris vie, grâce à des travaux routiers et surtout grâce à de nombreuses restaurations. La carrière est actuellement exploitée par la famille Verlee et vaut certainement la peine d'être visitée (sur demande !). Il va sans dire que de nombreux monuments récents dans notre région ont largement profité de ces pierres gigantesques aux couleurs chaleureuses !
