Le nom de Lesterny trouve son origine dans le nom Lesternivis qui se transforma en Lesterneias. En langue celtique ster ou encore staer signifie rivière et le radical ny découle quant à lui de niacum qui signifie demeure. Il est donc fort probable que Lesterny veuille dire « habitation au bord du ruisseau » ou « de la rivière ».
