La ferme du château d’Hougoumont a joué un rôle majeur dans la bataille de Waterloo le 18 juin 1815. Hougoumont disposait d’un grand jardin clos de murs, d’un verger et d’un parc. Hougoumont se trouvait sur le flanc droit de la position de Wellington pendant la bataille. Napoléon ne réussit pas à s’emparer de la ferme, malgré des attaques répétées. La ferme est protégée en tant que monument depuis 1938. Wellington voit en Hougoumont un point d’appui à sa défense sur le flanc droit, qu’il ne veut pas abandonner.
