De kasteelhoeve Hougoumont speelde een grote rol in de Slag bij Waterloo op 18 juni 1815. Hougoumont had een grote ommuurde tuin, een boomgaard en een park. Hougoumont lag tijdens de slag op de rechterflank van Wellingtons positie. Napoleon slaagde er niet in, ondanks herhaalde aanvallen, de hoeve te veroveren. De boerderij is sinds 1938 beschermd als monument. Wellington zag Hougoumont als steunpunt voor zijn defensie op de rechterflank dat hij niet uit handen wilde geven.
