Le plus grand cimetière militaire allemand de Belgique se trouve à Menin. Environ 47 900 soldats allemands y sont enterrés. Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, Menin était aux mains des Allemands, qui y aménagèrent des hôpitaux de campagne et des cimetières. Ce cimetière était proche d’un bois et fut donc baptisé « Menenwald ». Dans les années 1950, l’on décida de réunir tous les cimetières allemands de Belgique en quatre cimetières collectifs.
