In Menen kan je de grootste Duitse militaire begraafplaats in België vinden. Hier liggen ongeveer 47 900 Duitse soldaten begraven. Menen was tijdens WO I in Duitse handen. Deze begraafplaats lag nabij een bos en kreeg zo de naam ‘Meenen Wald’. In de jaren ’50 werd beslist om alle Duitse begraafplaatsen in België samen te voegen tot 4 verzamelbegraafplaatsen. Menenwald werd zo uitgebreid met zo’n 40.000 geïdentificeerde gesneuvelde soldaten.
