L'abbaye de Saint-Bernard-sur-l'Escaut ou de Lieu-Saint-Bernard fut fondée en 1243 par des moines venus de l'abbaye de Villers-la-Ville constitués en essaim. Il fut décidé que l'emplacement de l'abbaye cistercienne serait en bordure de l'Escaut, à l'embouchure de la petite rivière Vliet, sur le territoire de la commune actuelle de Hemiksem . Son nom fut choisi en référence à Bernard de Clairvaux.
