La zone forestière est située sur le territoire de la ville de Zottegem et appartenait à l’origine au prieuré chartreux Sint-Martens-Bos. La zone forestière de 12 ha appartient à la ville de Zottegem depuis 1978 et est gérée par la ville de Zottegem et l’Agence flamande de service public pour la nature et la forêt. La forêt est reconnue comme une zone européenne Natura 2000 et fait partie du réseau écologique flamand. Le Kloosterbos est relié aux sous-zones « Jansveld » et « Vossenhol » de la réserve de Natuurpunt Middenloop Zwalm et au Vijfstratenbos.
