À Nieuport, il y avait déjà en 1910 un service de ferry à la hauteur du débouché de l'Yser. Au milieu des années 1960, les rames ont été remplacées par un moteur hors-bord et à partir de 1976, la traversée est devenue gratuite. Depuis juillet 2011, un nouveau service de ferry gratuit opère entre la promenade Paul Orban et le domaine militaire, et de la semaine de Pâques jusqu'au 30 septembre, tous les jours, de matin à soir. Les bateaux peuvent transporter 50 passagers et 20 vélos et sont accessibles aux personnes handicapées.
