In Nieuwpoort war bereits 1910 eine Fährverbindung an der Mündung der IJzer tätig. In der Mitte der 1960er Jahre wurden die Ruderriemen durch einen Außenbordmotor ersetzt und ab 1976 war die Überfahrt kostenlos. Seit Juli 2011 betreibt eine neue kostenlose Fährverbindung zwischen der Paul Orban-Promenade und dem militärischen Gelände, und das von den Osterferien bis zum 30. September, täglich von morgens bis abends. Die Boote können 50 Passagiere und 20 Fahrräder transportieren und sind zugänglich für Menschen mit Behinderungen.
