A Nieuwpoort, già nel 1910 era attivo un servizio di traghetto all'altezza della foce dell'IJzer. A metà degli anni '60 i remi furono sostituiti da un motore fuoribordo e dal 1976 il passaggio divenne gratuito. Da luglio 2011 è operato un nuovo servizio di traghetto gratuito tra il lungomare Paul Orban e il dominio militare, e da Pasqua fino al 30 settembre, tutti i giorni dalla mattina alla sera. Le barche possono trasportare 50 passeggeri e 20 biciclette e sono accessibili per disabili.
