In Nieuwpoort, a ferry service was already in operation near the mouth of the Yser in 1910. In the mid-1960s, the oars were replaced by an outboard motor, and from 1976 onwards, the crossing became free. Since July 2011, a new free ferry service operates between the Paul Orban promenade and the military domain, from the Easter holidays until September 30, daily from morning until evening. The boats can carry 50 passengers and 20 bicycles and are accessible for people with disabilities.
