Au cours de plusieurs décennies d'extraction de gravel, de grands et profonds plans d'eau ont été formés. Comme nouvelle affectation de la zone, une carte de la nature et de la sécurité a été établie.
De début 2008 à août 2009, l'ensemble de la zone Negenoord-Kerkeweerd a été excavé afin d'optimiser la sécurité et la nature dans la région. Ainsi, la digue estivale a été déplacée et une construction d'entrée et de sortie a été réalisée.
Grâce à ces travaux de la société nv De Scheepvaart, la zone a eu des opportunités optimales pour se rédevelopper. En 2013, le Comité de Restructuration a aménagé les chemins et l'infrastructure dans la région.
