Construite par les jésuites entre 1615 et 1621, l’église Saint-Charles Borromée est un site incontournable pour les adeptes du grand maître de la peinture baroque : c’est l’église de Rubens par excellence.
En plus de la peinture, le peintre a largement contribué à l’ornementation de la façade et au couronnement du clocher de cette église typiquement baroque. L’abside du maître-autel, la chapelle mariale et les nombreuses sculptures et gravures sur bois témoignent aujourd’hui encore de sa splendeur passée.
Un mécanisme au-dessus du maître-autel permettait de changer les tableaux comme des décors de théâtre – cet ingénieux système, qui fonctionne encore, offre un spectacle magnifique!
