Il était de coutume pour les Romains d’enterrer leurs morts à l’extérieur des murs de la ville. La plupart des citoyens ont été enterrés dans un cimetière communal, mais des tumulus ont été érigés pour les citoyens éminents. Des dizaines de ces tumulus, également appelés tumuli, ont été érigés le long de la Via Belgica, dont trois sont situés sur le territoire actuel de Tongres ; le tombeau de Herstappel et les tumuli de Koninksem sur la Paardsweidestraat et le pavé romain.
