L'arbre se trouve sur l'ancienne motte de Wijgmaal, une île entre deux bras de la Dyle, où au 19ème siècle et au début du 20ème siècle se trouvaient le moulin à eau et la première usine d'amidons d'Edouard Remy. Ces bâtiments ont été démolis, un bras de la Dyle a été comblé, il y a maintenant un terrain de football et le centre sportif Ymeria. Le platane est, par ses dimensions, un objet déterminant important dans l'environnement immédiat. Il s'agit d'un arbre en touffe, né de la croissance de (probablement six) arbres différents qui ont été plantés dans le même trou de plantation, c'est une manière d'obtenir rapidement des arbres épais.
