Ce musée est dédié à Albert Thys, ce dalhemois né en 1849. Attaché à la maison militaire du roi Léopold II, il devient adjoint au secrétariat de l'Association Internationale Africaine. A partir de 1885 il projette la construction d'une ligne feroviaire au Congo pour relier la côte ouest à Léopoldville et en dirige ensuite la construction. En 1899, Thys fonde la Banque d'Outremer pour promouvoir l'installation d'entrerprises à l'étranger, surtout en Afrique. Dalhem et Thysville/Mbanza-Nungu sont en partenariat depuis 2005.
