Le centre de Nieuwkerke se dresse haut sur la ligne de crête. Au Moyen Âge, le village comptait beaucoup plus d’habitants qu’aujourd’hui. Du 14ème siècle jusqu’en 1582, lorsqu’un incendie a détruit une grande partie du centre, c’était un centre textile prospère, en concurrence avec Ypres. L’hôtel de ville à pignon à gradins et à façade, orné de deux lions, témoigne encore de cette prospérité médiévale. Nieuwkerke a été ravagée par un incendie à cinq reprises: en 1477, 1582, 1647, 1795 et enfin en 1918. L’église néo-gothique Notre-Dame de 1922 a été construite selon les plans de l’ancienne église gothique à partir de 1600 environ.
