Bien qu'il ait déménagé à Waregem avec ses parents et y ait grandi à l'âge de deux ans, Kanegem reste le lieu de naissance du double champion du monde de cyclisme Alberic - 'Briek' - Schotte (1919-2004). La statue de Jef Claerbout montre la position angulaire de Schotte, caractéristique du style rugueux d'un véritable 'flandrien'.
