Hoewel hij in zijn tweede levensjaar al met zijn ouders naar Waregem verhuisde en daar opgroeide, is en blijft Kanegem ook de geboorteplaats van tweevoudig wereldkampioen wielrennen Alberic - 'Briek' - Schotte (1919-2004). Het beeld van Jef Claerbout toont de hoekige zit van Schotte, kenmerkend voor de wroetende stijl van een echte 'flandrien'.
