Le Grenz-Echo a été fondé en 1927 comme « organisme chrétien pour la promotion des intérêts économiques des nouveaux Belges ». Le journal est la propriété du parti catholique.
De 1932 à 1985, il appartient à une société d'édition coopérative du nom de Grenz-Echo, dont le siège se trouve à Verviers. Dans les années 1980, cette société est en contact avec la Régie Générale de Presse, mais opte finalement pour une solution germanophone : le journal devient la propriété de six investisseurs de la région.
