La zone couvre 73 hectares et est gérée par l'Agence pour la Nature et les Forêts. Depuis 2002, de grandes parties de cette zone ont été achetées par l'Agence et gérées en tant que réserve naturelle flamande. La zone est protégée au niveau européen en tant que partie de la zone Natura 2000 « Zones de dunes y compris l'embouchure de l'Yser et le Zwin ».
