El área tiene 73 ha de superficie y está gestionada por la Agencia de Naturaleza y Bosques. Desde 2002, grandes partes de esta área fueron adquiridas por la Agencia y gestionadas como reserva natural flamenca. El área está protegida a nivel europeo como parte del área Natura 2000 'Zonas dunares, incluida la desembocadura del IJzer y el Zwin'.
