The area is 73 hectares in size and is managed by the Agency for Nature and Forest. Since 2002, large parts of this area have been purchased by the Agency and managed as a Flemish nature reserve. The area is protected at the European level as part of the Natura 2000 area 'Dune Areas including IJzermonding and Zwin'.
