Faisant partie du site Natura 2000 'Vallée de la Haine en aval de Mons', le bois d'Hainin renferme une mosaïque d'habitats majoritairement humides à marécageux: cariçaies à laîche des rives (Carex riparia) et laîche des marais (Carex acutiformis), jonchaies à jonc épars (Juncus effusus), réseaux de fossés, sources, etc. Il s'agit d'un important site de pompage d'eau de distribution qui induit des affaissements de sol plus ou moins importants. La faune, peu connue, comporte plusieurs espèces d'amphibiens, ainsi que la gorgebleue à miroir (Luscinia svecica) et un minuscule escargot protégé, le maillot de Desmoulin (Vertigo moulinsiana).
