Sur la place du même nom, le monument Frederiks - pour les Wervikans « les canons » - a été inauguré en 1971 en hommage à William George Frederik d’Orange-Nassau, le frère de Guillaume Ier (futur roi) des Pays-Bas. Il est grièvement blessé en 1793 lors de la bataille de Wervik, où une coalition de troupes anglaises et hollandaises bat les sans-culottes (républicains) français. Le monument a été créé grâce au soutien financier de vtbKultuur. Il est flanqué de deux canons, un léopard nommé Waldeck et un Clairfayt, respectivement un maréchal et un général de division. Les canons sont un don du gouvernement néerlandais.
