Het Frederiksmonument - voor de Wervikanen 'de kanons' - op het gelijknamige plein werd in 1971 ingehuldigd als eerbetoon aan Willem George Frederik van Oranje-Nassau, de broer van Willem I (later koning) van Nederland. Hij raakte in 1793 zwaargewond tijdens de Slag om Wervik, waar een coalitie van Engelse en Hollandse troepen de Franse sansculotten (republikeinen) versloeg. Het monument kwamt tot stand dankzij de financiële steun van vtbKultuur. Het wordt geflankeerd door twee kanonnen, luisteen naar de namen Waldeck en Clairfayt, respectievelijk een veldmaarschalk en een generaal-majoor. De kanonnen zijn een schenking van de Nederlandse overheid.
