Cyriel Van Hauwaert (1883-1974) est le tout premier Flandrien et le premier Belge à remporter des compétitions à l’étranger : Milan-San Remo, Paris-Roubaix et la première victoire d’étape belge au Tour de France (1909). Le succès lui apporte d’emblée gloire et fortune. Cyriel Van Hauwaert, fils de paysans, ne doit plus misérablement retourner les champs. Il devient un exemple pour les jeunes.
