Karel Van Wijnendaele participe pour la dernière fois au Tour de France en 1961, dans la caravane des suiveurs. Il doit par la force des choses quitter le Tour prématurément, il rentre chez lui malade. L'homme-orchestre décède le 20 décembre de la même année à l’âge de 79 ans. Sur la photo vous voyez l' enterrement de Karel Van Wijnendaele. Avec Cyriel Van Hauwaert (avec le nœud papillon), il a transmis à la Flandre le virus du cyclisme.
