Après la Grande Guerre, Bruges veut ériger une statue équestre en hommage au Roi Albert. La construction d’autres monuments commémoratifs par la ville freine ce projet. Finalement la municipalité tranche définitivement sur la statue en 1938. Or, la Seconde Guerre Mondiale remet sa réalisation aux calendes grecques.
Le monument commémoratif est finalement inauguré le 30 mai 1945. Pas au Zand, comme cela avait initialement été prévu, mais dans le parc le long de la Koning Albert I-laan. Il s’agit en même temps d’un monument aux morts pour Bruges et d’un hommage au souverain décédé prématurément.
Le sculpteur brugeois Octave Rotsaert montre le ‘roi-soldat’ à cheval. Son regard est tourné vers l’Isère, où il avait conduit les soldats belges au front.
