Depuis le début des années 50, en pleine guerre froide, ce domaine militaire était en activité. Les tours faisaient partie d'un réseau pour détecter une éventuelle attaque soviétique. Le domaine militaire a été gardé pendant des années par des conscrits jusqu'à sa fermeture en 2005.
En 1985, l'ancienne tour en métal a été démolie et une construction en béton de près de 70 mètres de haut a été érigée, qui détermine depuis des années la silhouette du petit village d'Ossel. La tour radar a été achetée en 2016 par Godfried Jacobs et ne sera pas démolie. Le témoin silencieux de la guerre froide est sécurisé et sera bientôt accessible, bien sûr sur rendez-vous et sous accompagnement. Les enfants d'école pourraient y jeter un coup d'œil à partir de 2021.
