Sinds begin jaren 50 in volle Koude Oorlog was dit militair domein. De torens maakten deel uit van een netwerk om een mogelijke Sovjetaanval te detecteren. Het militair domein werd jaren door dienstplichtigen bewaakt tot het in 2005 dicht ging.
In 1985 nog werd de oude metalen toren gesloopt en werd er een betonnen constructie opgetrokken van bijna 70 meter hoog die sinds jaren de skyline van het kleine dorpje Ossel bepaalt. De radartoren werd in 2016 gekocht door Godfried Jacobs en wordt niet afgebroken. De stille getuige van de Koude Oorlog wordt beveiligd en straks ook toegankelijk, weliswaar na afspraak en onder begeleiding. Schoolkinderen zouden er vanaf 2021 een kijkje kunnen gaan nemen.
