Le nom de cette large avenue fait référence à l’Expo 58, l’une des expositions universelles les plus réussies de tous les temps. Il s’agissait de la sixième exposition universelle officielle organisée en Belgique, et la première après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Cette exposition était entièrement consacrée à la liberté et au progrès, si caractéristiques des années 1950 et 1960. L’Exposition universelle, inaugurée par le roi Baudouin avec un appel à la paix et au progrès social et économique, a vu défiler plus de 42 millions de visiteurs.
