Le domaine Royal de Laeken est un vaste espace vert où l’on retrouve des pelouses, des zones boisées et des étangs. Il contribue fortement au rôle que joue le canal comme corridor écologique. Des Hérons cendrés viennent d’ailleurs y nicher et y pêcher le poisson. Ils forment ici la plus grande colonie de hérons en région bruxelloise. On y compte à peu près 200 nids fixés sur les solides branches de grands arbres, dont certains sont visibles depuis le canal. Le Héron cendré est un échassier de grande taille (de 84 à 102cm de long), au plumage dominé par le gris.
