Les berges du canal sont encore ici recouvertes de végétation basse, lieu de quiétude pour diverses espèces animales (insectes, oiseaux, petits mammifères, …). Cette nature présente sur les abords du canal contribue à renforcer le rôle que celui-ci joue en tant que corridor écologique, comme couloir de migration et de liaison entre les espaces verts. A 2km en aval, à partir du bassin de Biestebroeck, ces berges enherbées disparaissent définitivement et ne font leur réapparition qu’une dizaine de km après celui-ci, à Neder-Over-Heembeek.
