Venant du latin ‘Sonia’, le mot ‘Soignes’ aurait une parenté étymologique avec la Senne (anciennement ‘Sunna’), rivière qui traversait le massif forestier sur de nombreux kilomètres à une époque où celui-ci était plus étendu. Depuis la fin du 18ème siècle, le Hêtre y a été grandement favorisé, mais il doit désormais laisser un peu de place à d’autres essences (chênes, mélèzes, …). La gestion actuelle de la forêt vise à produire du bois de qualité, à favoriser la biodiversité et à accueillir le public.
