Het woord Zoniënwoud komt van het Latijnse 'Sonia', bos. Er zou ook een etymologische verwantschap zijn met de Zenne (vroeger 'Sunnia'), de rivier die over vele kilometers het bosmassief doorkruiste in tijden dat het nog veel uitgestrekter was. Sinds het einde van de 18de eeuw is vooral ingezet op de beuk, maar die moet toch ook wat plaats laten aan andere soorten zoals eik en lork. Het huidig bosbeheer wil vooral een kwaliteitsvol bos, de biodiversiteit alle kansen geven en het bos toegankelijk maken voor het publiek.
