Il y a maintenant 129 logements sociaux ici. Le projet a été salué dans la presse architecturale. Mais autrefois, des victimes de la peste et des soldats blessés s'y languissaient. C'était un endroit maudit, rempli de misère. Le Pesthuys ou Huys van Sinte Macharius a été construit sur un terrain isolé et aride le long de la Nederschelde, connu sous le nom de 't Sant. À partir de 1582, des victimes de la peste y ont été accueillies, mais surtout isolées.
