Ahora hay 129 viviendas sociales aquí. El proyecto fue elogiado en la prensa de arquitectura. Pero aquí alguna vez se consumían los víctimas de la peste y los soldados heridos. Era un lugar maldito con mucha miseria. El Pesthuys o Huys van Sinte Macharius fue construido en un terreno apartado y árido a lo largo del Nederschelde, conocido como 't Sant. Desde 1582 se acogió aquí a los que sufrían de la peste, pero sobre todo se les aisló.
