Ora qui si trovano 129 abitazioni sociali. Il progetto è stato lodato nella stampa architettonica. Ma un tempo qui soffrivano vittime di peste e soldati feriti. Era un luogo maledetto con molta miseria. Il Pesthuys o Casa di Sinte Macharius fu costruito su un terreno remoto e sterrato lungo il Nederschelde, noto come 't Sant. Dal 1582 qui furono accolti i malati di peste, ma soprattutto isolati.
